Duality was a first-person action/adventure game that was in development between 1997 and 1999 before being cancelled. It was being developed by Double Aught, which was founded by several developers from Bungie that were involved on the Marathon series of games.

Prior to their work on Duality, Double Aught were responsible for the levels featured in Marathon Infinity.

Story

On the official Duality website, we're given a rough outline of the premise for the story.

Before the lab, there was nothing. Then the Underground busted you out. Their plan was to take a small amount of your blood, enough to prove the Factors are tampering with human genes. Unfortunately, their spies didn't expect you to be alive. Now you must fight your way past the crack troops and inhuman experiments of the Deciding Factor. And they're willing to spill a much larger quantity of blood. In fact, they'd prefer to.

Getting out alive is just the beginning. Your new allies follow the Oracle, the leader of the human church. The problem is, he's been in a trance for the last hundred years and they haven't a clue why you're important. To make matters worse, the Factors are his priesthood. There is a prophecy as old as the ruined cities about an Enemy hidden deep within the planet. You have one chance to discover the last remnant of the ancient Builders and the evil that destroyed them long ago.

In the trackless ruins you'll find deadly weapons from humanity's past and eldritch devices to unlock your own latent powers. But you'll need more than firepower to survive. Story-driven gameplay, intelligent characters and cinematic cut-scenes make knowing your allies as important as blasting your foes into the next life.

The following is taken from Courtney Evans' website, which gives us a little more information regarding the world itself.

Duality's world is harsh - in many ways. The planet's axis points at the sun, so that one side is a perpetually baked desert, while the other is all darkness and ice. The narrow band at the equator is the only livable area. The human society on Duality is equally divided - at the top are the aristocrats and the Factors, a priesthood that controls the last remnants of ancient technology left on the planet, while at the bottom are the common people and the Polys, a class defined by physical deformity and doomed to the hardest labor. Deep within the planet's caves, and under the glaciers and deserts at the poles, wait the Builders - a sentient race laid low by a supernatural enemy many thousands of years ago. Slowly, they - and their enemy - have been reawakening.

The player is thrown into the midst of this world, with few clues to where he comes from or what he is. The player must fight well and think carefully in order to survive, and as more and more of the game world descends into civil war and chaos, the player's fight for survival becomes a fight to save humanity - and the Builders - from destruction.

Developers

Below is a list of just some of the developers that were involved with the game. Unfortunately many of the roles are missing as they weren't clearly documented at the time, though this will of course be updated if any more information comes forward.

Additionally there may be a few developers missing from this list as well. Trying to track down an accurate list for a cancelled game is incredibly tricky!
