Box-Art

New find - Shareware 1.1 Download

I found out that the Duke Nukem 3D V1.3D with the french and english on the box has dodgy screen shots on the back! NONE OF THEM ARE FROM THIS VERSION OF THE GAME! A lot of what I say about this is SPECULATION and most can't be prooven as FACT! Also, this isn't something that hasn't been noticed before.

Here we go... Be sure to click the pictures to get a full size view, they're scanned at 2400dpi

So, in this pic, we see more detail on the wall (There's a trick for doing this, i'll show you one day) this level doesn't exist either, the babe palletes are white and the freezethrower is different, more detailed too. I don't think anything's coming out of that freezethrower, but it looks to be firing, the textures and pallete look to be of older duke nukem style (more intense color)

Once more, this is different to the game, pallete problem means this dude has green teeth! Obviously an early version of a boss (no, i'd never have guessed!) and an early space level i reckon.

The parralax is different to any i've ever seen, the building near the right has good shading (normally caused by making 2 sectors in the same place this trick! hard to describe) - building on far right and centre has a texture i am not sure if it was in the game, possibly it evolved into the texture with the green on it (like the condemned building in red light district) - there's a bit of box art in the way of the explosion and it's sharps, the missile graphic is different as it has no smoke trail or fins? on it, looks a lot like the one from strife and just behind the explosion what looks like a massive door... Hmmm....

Hmm... This looks like death row, the difference is the slanted ceiling, i guess they just didn't like the look of it, but the red switch (directly above the alien face one, that opens the Doom easter-egg) is either not present or of a darker gray circle design, opposed to the orange-red that it became - otherwise it's all about the same, cept maybe that ceiling texture on the top right, i'm sure the stained glass is a tad different too, but i'm not certain!

I don't remember seeing this level either, the blue line at top-left of wall interests me, can't have been too easy to put up, unless the wall comes short of the sky and it's a mask? I dunno. Duke on bottom left has chickenpox or something because there's red bits on him, nay, it's a palette problem! There's a green legged duke (i think) on the walkway top right. This reminds me of a level that was in the game... Quite a lot actually, in-fact, wasn't it the first or second demo in the 1.3D game? Ya, methinks it was, i guess they liked this idea, I wouldn't mind seeing what is behind that grey door, if anything, or if it's even a door, it'd be a good trick if it was!

At first glance it's red light district, at second glance it may have become that, there appears to be two open windows instead of 1, this would make sense because there was two rooms there... Maybe there was a technical flaw or something? Who knows, the explosion looks good and the floor is dirrerent, check the status-bar! No nuke-symbols - it's a red thing here, the top left and right are black & yellow chevrons and the keys are in a box they won't fit inside - they must have been swapped with the inventory! Look closely at the ammo! where 1 would be there's an infinity symbol (makes sense) and then there's 2-9 so a weapon was a late addition, i think it was actually the laser and not the freexethrower because I remember reading something about that once, in fact, look at it closely, and you see that this is a lot different to your average status-bar!

This is definitely the Red light district! different bloodstains, different pool balls and a load of whine! If the heads and legs of dead enemies were remains and not just sprited in, it'd be cool, but if it happened, it'd be obvious why it was removed!

What is totally wrong about this? First it's thelameduke gun that later became the chaingun, second the lizard on the lefthas got NO PALETTE! much like the N64 version (Pictured below) - I'd like to see what the gray thing is on the table to the lower right, this looks more "ammeture" like some of the earlier levels did, i think this is a very old screenshot! Chances are, there is no version of this level in existence anymore.

In fact, Duke 64 had a lot of old-version things other than this, such as (I was reminded today) the car, just below where I am flying in that image, i don't know why.

The enforcer on the box was undoubtedly rendered from a 3D model program, but (esp. on his knees) he is different somehow... Feel free to praise me on my steady hand while I scanned it, and ignore my nicotine fingers!

France!

Here's the box!

My french is rubbish, so this is bad (I couldn't find my translator! Grrr!!!) but fairly accurate i think:

The french writing means :

Prepare yourselves for the ultimate slaughter in 3D
The bloodthirsty aliens invaded the Los Angeles of Tomorrow. Henceforth the humans are the first on the list of the species of disappearance. Duke Nukem is the only man capable of eradicating the aliens... and it is going to make him the Smile to the lips.

Of the astounding features
Explode yourselves in a fascinating 3D universe! 28 levels of hyper-realistic action.
(I don't like the sound of that "Explode Yourselves" hmm)

Discover a technology of highest-rank
Who will allow you to explore a really virtual and entirely interactive world thanks to the motor 3D << Build Engine >>.
(Motor must mean engine?)

Total liberty of movements
You are the duke and you can run, jump, crawl or fly in jetpack.
(THE DUKE! - I like the sound of that)

Fight death between dukes
Measure enters you Dukes or fight in team, have two via modem or until has 8 players in network. Send your adversaries thanks to the RemoteRidicule system
(Not sure here about the "Measure" it could be a reference to the amount, e.g. of skill)

Maximal use of the capacities of the computers
Super-quick game out of 486. For the machines Pentium: SVGA option diagrams high resolution. Shades and dynamic reflections calculate in real time.
(computers, as in the plural? I thought the license said install on only one? i think i'll pretend to be french on this one )

Could these dynamic reflections be the stuff-of-lameduke?

That's WAR2.MAP - Must have been the multiplayer equivalent of E4M1 in lameduke

Only speculation mind!

OTHER OLD STUFF THAT MADE IT
open the .con files up in a text editor (like EDIT,  for us ol' dos users, or NotePad for lazy windows users) and look for stuff like "COKE" and "SIXPAK" there's some other stuff and a load of un-used code too! - also in the art, the sprites for the firing of a lameduke gun still exist, along with other art.

AN ODD DISCOVERY
Sometimes, if you have a floor and ceiling as a space skybox in a level, and you walk into it, the gravity lessens or inverts and you die, as of Duke 3D v1.4 you could adjust the gravity globally in the .CON file, another interesting point is I think the spacesuit sprite was actually going to be an inventory item that worked, maybe? Once more, speculation on my part, and it's probably been said before by many people.

The early days for me!

WOW! This was one of the first times i'd played Duke 3D! Version 1.2 as well (Oops!)

Oh, man, either i'd not had it long, or i just sucked! Looks like Holywood Holocaust! I know exactly where! Just before the bit where the level end is, the fire in the metal container is just to my left! Obviously that  crappy old machine didn't like the Slope Tilting feature, as it is apparently turned off!

I still play Duke now! - But I'm better at it!

Duke inspired me to experiment with gaming more, when I learned DOS (By the age of 7) I used to make crappy games out of batch files uning CHOICE and ERRORLEVEL based decisions and ascii graphics - man that was hard [ALT][0][1][7][6] ° [ALT][0][1][7][7] ± [ALT][0][1][7][8] ² [ALT][0][2][1][9] Û used to make a gradient!  -  I often aspire to creating something as great as Duke, but i probably never will, even if I did, i'd make it clear that it was Duke that inspired that, and that he was the original and the first game of it's kind!

Oh well, that's enough rambling from me!
